What is the name of your state? ohio

We have two items we filed on Bk7 (old laws) and we need to return... I remember being told to wait till after the discharge and I seem to remember that someone mentioned that we should wait and make sure the lienholders use the process / and repossess with a sheriff etc. That if we do the volunatry thing we could cause problems if they later made claims on the items for some reason.

Is there validity to this. Any advice?

I want to give back the items I just don't want to increase my exposure by giving them to someone and them later saying they didn't get them.

While I can understand the precaution, you have ZERO liability, no one can do anything to you. Document everything you do, drop the stuff off, get a receipt and signatures from a person in authority and keep those copies for forever.
