What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Washington State

This has been about 1 1/2yrs ago now, but it is still going on and i'm having second thoughts....here's what it is:

I was trading some part-time handyman/horse training for horse boarding here in King County, Washington state.
The person i was working for has full-time employment in a junior high school in King County.
During just a regular discussion she was telling me about where she worked and all the good/bad about working for her school. She added that one nice thing is that since both her grandchildren also attend schools in her district she monitors their grades and information weekly, so they always know they cant get away with anything. Then informing her daughter if anything is posted in their files in the network... Which i thought was kinda strange..
One night we were talking just in general about family and i mentioned that my niece and nephew go to a different school in her district. But i'm not real close to the family or what all is going on with them. In discussion i mentioned their names not thinking anything of it...

The next time i saw her she felt the need to tell me that i wasnt on my nephews emergency contact lists?
(she said she couldnt remember my nieces name, but if i wrote it down she would look her up the next day)
That she could probably add me to the emergency list if i wanted her too??
How he was doing in school as far as grades go??
Things that she said she had access to in her work computer. That its her computer and its no big deal...

My brother was really p*ssed obviously that someone would just divulge this information...since i could have been anyone. An ex trying to kidnap? ....this Lady had never met my family, been to my own home, nothing. she only knew what i had told her about me.

--------------------------- that was about 1 1/2yrs ago...and i never told my brother who it was just to keep the peace, so to say.

HOWEVER, since i was still friends/associates of this Lady i recently stopped by her place to find out she does a lot for her Daughters 4-H club that just happens to ALSO be based out of her School district she works for. She boards a lot of the animals for the girls of the club. That she also research's private information about the kids in the 4-H club and also doing research on any kids wanting to join from her work computer. These kids are middle school aged children. and my nephew was 15 at the time

Personally after thinking about it, i feel that she is putting any of these kids at an extreme risk of danger. She is the type of person that is very vindictive and feels that she can do whatever she wants too.

I dont really know anything about the laws on this sorta thing. My main full-time career is a therapist/consultant. But their must be something about using this information illegally. Something like the HIPPA laws i deal with..

Just from working with her and getting to know her personality i know that a slap on the hand would do nothing. I feel that she needs to be terminated.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!

Actually YES i am, i own my own Consulting Company based in Seattle,WA. However, obviously your an idiot...lol.

Anyone can typo.

At this point, nothing you can do. Had you reported to her employer at the time, something might have been done. But HIPAA definitely does not apply.

Depending on what this woman has accessed and divulged, she may be violating FERPA. Depending on her job at the school, she may or may not be entitled to access students' educational records.

Telling you that you are not on the emergency card is not a violation. Offering to add is not. However, her administrators would certainly take a dim view of that.

It is a violation to divulge a student's grades and/or disciplinary issues.

You can inform the school of your friend's actions, but you will not be informed of the actions, if any, taken.

Actually, SP is not an idiot. I, too, am having a hard time wrapping my head around that claim, due to the vast number of errors in your post.

At my school, this type of thing the OP described would have been dealt with very seriously. We are not allowed access to any student who is not OUR student. Parents are not even allowed to check on their children, if they work for the district.

OP should write out her complaint in a letter, call the superintendent, and ask what needs to be done to file a complaint against this employee. You don't get to decide on the punishment, and probably won't even know what happens, but at least you will have filed the complaint. Puts her bosses on notice she is abusing her computer privileges.
