What is the name of your state?Wisconsin
I was recently contacted by a collection agency in Nebraska about a judgement against me obtained in 2001 for a cell phone debt from 1997. this is the first time that this debt has been brought to my attention. I check my credit report regualarly and this has not shown up on it. they say they are going to garnish my wages if not paid in full. can a collection agency in Nebraska garnish my wages in Wisconsin?

You weren't aware of the judgement against you?
Were you aware of the original debt or is this whole thing from out of the blue?

State is WI

I was not aware of the debt. it was from a cell phone i had in 1997 when i was in college. I never used the thing, it was only for emergency use. My mother was paying the monthly payment. I don't have a lot of contact with her these days. one day I went to use the phone and there was no service. I just assumed she let the contract run out or canceled the service. then 7years later I get this notice of judgement.

Don't believe some collection agency stooge that tells you there's a judgment against you !!! If its not on your credit reports, there's a good chance there is NO JUDGMENT at all ! This could very well be a tactic to make you pay on a time-barred debt. Call the courthouse where you were living in 2001 when this alleged judgment took place and find out for certain if there really is a judgment. If they say they have nothing, then you know its likely a bullcrap collection tactic.

SOL in WI is 6 years. If nothing has been paid on it since 1997, the SOL has run out. Call the courthouse first thing Monday morning and ask the court clerk to look for anything filed against you before you do anything more.
