It depends on the offense ... in general, the state has one year to file on misdemeanors and three years for felonies. But, this can change if the violation is serious (sex crimes, murder, etc.), has not yet been discovered, the offender leaves the state, etc.
I do just want to point out, in case you are not aware of this, but the statute of limitations ends once charges have been filed, meaning that if you have received a ticket, then SoL does not apply to you and there is no such thing as waiting it out.
