What is the name of your state? NC

I am in the process of preparing to leave my husband of 7 years. I have two children ( 5 and 4)and I want to take them with me. But I want to make sure I do things right to make sure I can get full custody of the kids. I don't want to take taint my chances. Please help. I fear of his reaction when I do leave, so besides doing it right I need to make it safe too.

First, you need to realize that your odds of getting full custody are quite slim.
Judges simply don't award full custody to either parent these days except in extreme/extraordinary circumstances.

At a minimum its usually joint legal custody (joint decision making) and often there is some sort of joint physical custody even if the timesharing is not 50/50.

Leaving and taking your children with you would not "taint" your chances for primary physical custody. Leaving and NOT taking your children with you very possibly could. Never leave your children.

What steps do I need to take in order to have a good case for getting primary custody? What do judges take into consideration?

Other than not leaving your children. There are really no "steps" to take. If the two of you cannot come to an agreement regarding custody/visitation...then the judge will decide, and the judge will base it on the best interest of the children. In general, its usually the parent who has been the primary caretaker for the children. In general, even these days, that's usually mom.
