Hi, I currently live in the state of texas, & I have been told that I can legally move out at 17, without parents consent. My home situation isn't bad but it's not exactly ideal. I'm just ready to leave home. I will have a place to stay with my boyfriend & his family, I'll still be going to school, I just don't want to have to deal with the police coming & making me come back home or being put in the system. I know two people who moved out when they were 17 without parent consent, but I just want to make sure that I can leave without my parents consent, please help
Thank you!

The only advice I will offer is to reconsider this idea. What will likely happen is you will be knocked up and destroy your future.

Texas is one of those states where a poorly written law means that some law enforcement officers are reluctant to bring home a 17 year old who is in a safe place. That does not mean that it is legal for you to move out at 17; that no law enforcement officer will bring you home, or that your parents cannot go get you and bring you home themselves.

In Texas, just like all other states (except the ones where the relevant age is 19 or older) the age at which you can leave home and there be NO way you can be forced back home is 18. If you have your parents' permission to move out, fine. Otherwise you live where your parents say you live until you are 18.

Blue gave you excellent advice but, being a mind-reader, I can sort of tell that you're not going to heed that sort of solid, sensible advice.

So yeah, in Texas, if you "run away" the police won't force you to go back home. Of course, that doesn't mean your parents can't force you to come back home themselves ... their rights to do that don't disappear until you reach the age of majority.

Please reconsider!! No living situation is ideal & if it's not that bad, stay!!!! You have NO idea how BAD it can be!!! You might be getting away from YOUR parents rules just to be under someone else's. Your parents are to protect you until you're at least 18 for a reason. Trust me!

Yes, you can move out, but keep in mind that even if your parents do not try to force you to move back in by having you dragged back by the police, they may respond in other ways. And do not fail to realize that they have full rights to reclaim any and all property of theirs that you are now using, including their insured and titled vehicles, their electronic devices and phone plans, etc. Also keep in mind that you do not come free, and that staying with a friends' family doesn't mean you have a place to go, a roof over your head, food, utilities, transportation, electronics and all the things that living with your parents may be providing to you now. Friends parents have a way of becoming much less understanding when you are a star boarder and at outs with your own parents.

IF your friends live in another school district you might NOT be entitled to a free education there ....
