My wife bought a new vw beetle in June. We replaced the factory radio with a new cd player from a local stereo store. On taking the vw in for routine service, the service manager claimed we had voided the warranty on the whole car by changing out the radio. Looked at the warranty and it doesn't say anything specifically about it. The stereo store said that some other car dealers have 'tried' to use that story before, but backed off. What can I do? The new radio obviously doesn't affect anything other than how the music sounds....Bob

The Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) through their lobbyists in the US Congress have gotten laws passed to prevent the abusive situation you have described. If people can buy aftermarket superchargers and headers for thier trucks without voiding their warranty, you can buy a radio for your bug. The website is "www.sema.org". From there you can submit inquiries to verify this info. Stand your ground with your dealer and/or service manager. Make them produce "paper" to support their position. I think you'll find that they won't be able to. Good luck!
