My dad passed away in 1998 and I am estranged from my family, so I know they never told me about what I was left in the will. Is there anything I can do to find out the contents of the will at this time? And if so, how do I go about getting what was left to me?

DEAR FALCONJEWEL:

If you know the city/state and month/year where the death occurred, contact the county courthouse and check with the probate court to get a copy of or look at the will and the entire probate file to look at the financial information to review how it was handled.

There may not have been enough assets left over after taxes and other debts were paid to be able to distribute anything to the heirs, and then again, they may be trying to hide something from you by not contacting you. You can contact the estate executor to find out what happened.

SINCERELY,
