What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

My friend runs a website where he advertises services and is targeting different communities. He has landing pages with keywords that attract results in Google. Recently he got a complaint from a school asking who gave the website authorization to claim to offer those services using their name.

Is a school name copyrighted and not allowed to be used on a third party website? Even if misrepresentation exists (which I don't believe it does in this case), does the webmaster have to remove the content or face legal battles?

Names can't be copyrighted. They can (and frequently are) trademarked.
The website isn't forced to remove the content under the DMCA for trademark violations, though many will. You can still be sued.
