Greetings.

I am the owner of a newly established, yet already highly popular website. This website is indeed a business and generates an income with the potential to do very well.
I have spent the past 8 months designing, developing and promoting the project and have worked very hard establish it.
The project itself is very much focused on the local area.

There is another local based website of the same topic, who has not taken our arrival with good heart. There have been a number of attacks recently, both on the project and on myself. I have good reason to believe that the other website is behind those attacks.

I have worked hard to keep our theme and content original so as not to step on anybody's toes. The attacks have been fairly minor and petty, and have not concerned me until this point.

The other website is now claiming that somebody has logged into their forums, posting serious allegations against the owner, which have resulted in damage of character. I am being blamed for this attack.
They are claiming that my IP was logged and is now being traced. From that point legal action will begin.

Firstly, I would like to think that I am above that type of behavior. I wouldn't dream of doing such a thing, or launching an attack in any public arena. Aside from this, we also run as server, with forums, and have a good understanding of the IP logging system, and would never be stupid enough to launch such an attack from my personal computer.

At this point I am not sure if somebody had actually posted this abuse and I am simply being accused, or if this has been doctored in order frame me. They are obviously very petty, and have in fact told many people recently that there are ways to put websites out of business. I can only assume they have been planning to damage us for some time.
I have evidence that this person is determined to put my business out of action, and I can only assume this is the latest weapon in his arsenal.

I am now being threatened with libel action. Obvioulsy I am innocent.
Could somebody please explain to me how British law operates in this scenario, and any options which may be open to me.

Thank you.

This site deals with US law only. I'm afraid no one here has a clue how British law works.

Sorry we can't help.
