missouri; is my husband entitled to get my ring back and vice-versa? We haven't written up the specifics of the divorce and I had heard something about a state passing a law that gives the ring back to the giver, but I think that was only for the breaking off of the engagement. We were married less than 6 months.

My response:

In Missouri, wedding rings are returnable to the other party ONLY if you're able to locate the original Cracker Jacks box.

Just playing with you. When it comes to wedding rings, the law in each State is that such items are "gifts" to the other person and are not returnable, unless there is a voluntary return. You can't be forced to return the rings to each other UNLESS there was provable fraud, "ab initio" (from the start).

So, if one or both of you are still paying the payments on the rings, each of you is stuck with your respective payments on that debt - - despite the fact that yours is a $3,000.00 ring, and his is only $300.00.

Good luck.

you also run the chance of getting stuck paying for both rings.

i found out the hard way. we split the property and the debts. he didn't pay on his debts. they came after me. marital debts. they do not have to recognize the divorce decree because they were not party to the litigation. it's a joint debt and both parties are responsible. if they can't get money from him, they will go after you.
