A woman has been actively besmirching my buddy, calling her a crackhead, drug addict & thief as well as stating that she is unfit/incompetant at her job. All false. There are witnesses aplenty to her spewings and no evidence to support these derogatory statements. She has no $ for a lawyer and may, in fact, be losing sub-contracting work as a result of this. What thinkest thou?

I am going through something similiar-if the comments are causing your friend to lose out on jobs, I would suggest having an attorney write a letter. Maybe you have a free legal aid clinic? Otherwise, the person bad mouthing your friend will evantually stop. People like that usually bore themselves then move on to torture someone else.
