Ok..here's my story. I moved into my apartment in July. I applied for the apartment 6 weeks prior to my move in date and was approved. Less than 24hrs before I was to move in I was told my apartment would not be rady for another 3 to 4 weeks. So I through a fit...I ended up getting another apartment in the same complex for 3 weeks, until they said my origional apartment was ready. I was "not allowed" to inspect the new apartment prior to moving in. When I finaly got in there were several things wrong and it wasn't cleaned. For one my air conditioning didn't work properly. I would have to set it at 65 to get it to drop the temp to 80. Also my bathroom sink has a small leak and the outside front porch light is out.Due to the fact that I have an older dog (14yrs old) the temp problem was a big deal. For 4 months I called almost everyday regarding my repairs with none or little response. There is also a small hole in my ceiling.
The maintance people looked at the problems, but none were fixed. As far as the sink, I was told that I would simply have to tighten it up once in awhile...I had been very very patient, but in October I was about to put my next months rent into an esquior acct. and wait until they fixed the repairs. However I ended up having to go out of work for 3 months due to medical reasons and ended up paying rent late for those same 3 months. During the winter months I discovered that my air conditioning problem also effect my heat. ( It's one unit for both) Still no repairs have been made. My electric bill has been outragous because I must keep it running to keep warm or in the summer cool. This month ( finally ) I am going to put my rent into an account an demand repairs. I would like to know if there is a way I could ask for a percentage of my electric bill from these months to also be covered. Also where do I stnd with any of these problems, I feel like they have discriminated against me.....

No. There is no way you could ask for a percentage of your electric bill from these months to also be covered.

What would be the basis for such a demand?

What would be the basis for your claim of discrimination?

OK .. what state are you in?

And Why do you think that learning about home maintenence is not a good use of all that money you threw out the window for your educkatsuhn!

For example:

DO YOU KNOW WHAT HOME DEPOT IS?

Well maybe if you got off your assss and asked QUESTIONS instead of BitcHHHing you would learn about heat pumps.

Because they DO NOT work good in extreme climates, and they are CHEAPER to install and HORRIBLE on the electricty!

Also if you asked is the vent CLOSED! if not you were letting in air from the outside causing the heat pump to work longer and a higher bill...ITS YOUR FAULT!

Second here is a DIRTY TRICK to use on heat pumps....did you ever notice truckers put cardboard on there radiators?

Its to prevent air flow to warm up the radiator so they can have more HEAT in the cab!

Well the samr thing for heat pumps you block off part of the air intake with a loose towel, and it GETS HOTTER!...AND THE SAME IN REVERSE... it will make the AC COLDER!

But of course it damages the coils and makes it last a lot less, but who cares right, you have plenty of WRITTEN complaints about the lack of heat...so they cannot force you to pay for anything after you leave.

You have to be TWICE as sneaky as the Landlord!

To LL...My reason for feeling that the apartmnet complex should pay for a percentage of the electric is due to the fact that if they fixed the problem I would not have such a high bill. It is their fault. Second the discrimination...I've been harrased by an employee here ( a girl in their office) because of my sexual orietations. And because she handle alot of the messages passed between management and maintance I feel there is a connection. And yes I've made several complaints, but to no avail..

Ok to Mary Hartman...I'm in NJ
I feel sorry for the people who actually know you. You are very rude and I'm sure that is becuse you feel invinsible on the internet.
I picked a complex to move into BECAUSE they will handle (or are suppose to) all maintance....I work way too hard and way too much to have to worry about fixing things myself. Plus I am not physically able to, but that is really none of your business.
Also fixing things myself is against my lease agreement.
I suspect that you may not have a clue regarding landlord tenat laws do you...Or doing the right thing the right way...

My point is we pay rent for more than the four walls we live in...It is also for the sevices they claim to provide. It seems crazy that we have no laws to protect us.

To all others...This forum is suppose to be for help..If you have nothing helpful to say ( in a nice way) please don't bother to respond....Thanks

Sounds to me that you have a functioning air conditioner. What more do you think they owe you?

Are you being discriminated against, or are you just being harassed?

To need anwsers:

This is a class in LIFE SKILLS and you FAILED IT!

You rented an apartment, not knowing what the TOTAL cost would be , you didnt call the electric company to see what the last tenant paid.....you did not look at the apartment very well, and you took it.

NOW you are schocked.....I would NOT have taken the apartment, UNLESS the rent was very cheap, but then again , I ask questions....

Sorry Kiddo...next time ya gotta do your homework.

OH try those tricks of putting a towel under the air intake of heat pump and see if it gets hotter...

The tempature coming out of the vent is only 2 degrees less then the room temp. I do know that that is not a funtioning air conditioner. That is an old extremly failing one therefor in need of fixing. I set it very low and had to wait more than 24hrs for it to get 1or 2 degrees lower in the room. I know all about harsh weather and that even a great one wouldn't do well in server conditions. This is not the case here. As a rule it should be a min of 20 degrees lower than any temp in the room. I did several test in several locations on different days with the same results. I did have someone qualified look at it tell me the problem but couldn't allow them to fix it, again because it's against my lease agreement. I even offered this person sevices to the complex....I've adjusted the vents to get the max out of what I have, but it doesn't help.( Meaning closing vents to certain rooms, helping to effect main rooms better)
And being harrassed by the person in the office has included her discriminating against me.Such as not passing on messages, calls, information. Hanging up when I call. Claiming managemnet is not in. Claiming maintance made a mistake. All proven unture when I talked to other people..i.e. managers and maintance. She represent the company and dispite my written and verbal complaits has done nothing about it.I am not the only one in the area this woman harrasses. However I am the only one I know of who lives here. She also lives in the complex.

To Mary (assuming)Hartman....I did do all that and than some. My bill is much higher than the average for this exact unit. The rent IS NOT cheap. Another reason they should pay for what they say they deliver.
You assume way too much with little or no info. Plus you seem to like doing things all the wrong way. Causing even possible fires. Not real smart, I bet some day you'll learn a LIFE LESON about that. Hopefully without anyone getting hurt.
I was given a tour of a different apartment and not permitted into this one due to repairs being done. Yes that didn't sit well with me, but it was after the fact and after I had already moved out of my last place. They sprung that part on me less than 24hrs before I moved remember...And after I had paid...
Thanks anyway..but I don't think you know what your talking about.
