What is the name of your state?NEW YORK STATE. My child is 7 years old. He attends a public school in a small town.He is in a class in which there are 2 classes, one 2nd grade and the other is 3 rd grade. 2 teachers 40 students all in one room. His class must eat lunch and have recess with third graders. There are several more 2nd grade classes which have lunch and recess at a different time just second graders. Since the beginning of the year he is being bullied by classmates. Being made fun of and now being punched and the other day he came home with bruises on his arm.I have complained.HE does not want to go to school because he is scared. He has to be carried to the door screaming. I have now asked that he be transferred to a normal second grade class. I never wanted him put in this class at all.The principal and superintendent refused to move him to another class. What can I do? I work so I requested that my mother come into the school to observe the class. I was told that she could not that they wanted one of the parents. The school has a book of rules and regulations which states that a parent or civilian can come into the class to observe with the permissions of the teacher. Do I have any rights or say about my child?

You do, your mother doesn't. I'd suggest taking a vacation or personal day - or have Dad do so - to observe the class.

And, tell the teachers that if they don't put a stop to the bullying you will get a lawyer and go after them personally. If your child is telling the truth there is NO excuse for teachers to ignore or allow bullying by any student. Better yet, get your child out of that ridiculous environment.

Don't ever trust what they tell you. Learn the laws in your state.....it usually differs greatly from what they want you to believe. Also hook up with schwablearning.com and talk to parents about general things. Do it......your son needs you to hear him.

It is a lot of work, but if you want your child to get a serious education at this critical time of learnng math and reading rules, get a good home school program (Abeka(sp?), etc.) and teach your son the basics (without the PC fluff) as well as the values you want him to learn. He doesn't need "socialization" from bullies. There is probably a homeschool network in your area that will help you.

A good lawyer can make a case that your son has been denied his educational rights. Maybe a little shock therapy would help the school and the board. Maybe you'll get enough to offset what you pay in taxes to babysit everyone else's kids while at school.

Make sure you contact one or more HS support groups. They not only have educational and social functions, but they are also knowledgeable about your legal options. An online search should give you a few (Homeshoolers United, etc.).

Just to let you know, recent studies verify that due to the failure of schools nationwide to insure students know basic math functions most kids have big problems later with algebra and higher math. Same goes for spelling, word formation, and writing. If you can teach your child to calculate and communicate he'll be years ahead of all the others. Calculate and communicate without having to ask or look. Memorization may not be the most fun way to learn, but it builds critical brain functions and makes everything beyond that much easier. Get out the Flash Cards.
