First, I just want to say that I would like to protect myself, and probably won't pursue anything.
This morning I was driving my motorcycle to work. As I approached an intersection, the oncoming traffic (a truck) more or less stopped at the stop sign they had. I didn't have a stop sign, so I proceeded through the intersection. However, I presume the driver didn't see my motorcycle, or thought they could make it because the lady pulled out and into the intersection.
In an effort to avoid a collision, I hit the brakes and my rear tire locked up. I started to 'fishtail' and instinctually put my foot down to stabalize myself. Stupid move, yes. At anyrate, I tweaked my ankle and as the day progresses, it's getting worse. I'm beginning to think i may need to see a doctor.
I didn't notify the police 'officially' right away. There was an officer about a block away that I informed about the incident, but he didn't want to do anything. No harm done at the time. The lady took off, but I did get the plate number for future reference.
Like I said, my ankle is starting to sweel and is generally feeling bad, so I called the police to file a formal complaint (hit and run?). However, since I managed to avoid being hit, they say 'no accident' and they aren't willing to do anything.
Assuming I go to the doctor I feel that this lady ought to be responsible. Even if it's only a couple hundred bucks for a sprained ankle and office visit. I don't think hiring an attorney would be the right thing to do since I wouldn't get anything out of it. I was thinking of small claims or something.
Is this viable? If so, how do I track her down from the plate number? This happened in St Louis, MO.
Thanks in advance.
