What is the name of your state?i live in a Apartment complex in ohio, Since i have lived here (July) i have had several maintenance problems..which have not been taken care of...for one i live on the third floor of my building and i have a balcony which is broken and not up to code and is about ready to fall off ..i reported this and the OWNER of the complex told the maintenance person to take a deadbolt lock and put it on backwards(so the lock was on the ouside and the key part was on the inside and then didn't give us any keys) so i nor my husband would be able to use it...and that is our only other exit out of this building besides our front door.. also we had a really large snowfall here recently(24") and it rained and melted all the snow off our balcony and now our whole living room is completly soaked and it ruined our $2,000.00 T.V. and other things and i am sure they won't do anything but tell us to dry up the water since they haven't made an effort to fix anything else...But they expect their rent to be paid....i am very furious and i want to know what i can do..i can NOT afford to move and i really don't think i should have to pick and leave b/c someone isn't responsible enough to take care of their property..thank you ~BrandySmith~

You look up your property code inspect Agency .
Call them and complain.
State you need them to come out to do and inspection and make out a report.

The Inspector will make out a report and Give the landlord X amount of time to fix the violations.

As far a damage to personal property. If you can show somehow it was due to the faulty building structure , and have proof of the damage , you might consider filing a small claims action , but generally you should have renter's insurance .

Brandy, just out of curiosity, what city are you in? Sounds like a very similar situation to an associate of mine.

And how is it someone who is in such dire financial straights that they can't afford to move and can't afford a place that isn't crumbling around them can still afford a $2,000 television? (Heck, I'm a lawyer and I don't have a $2,000 TV).

Methinks someone's priorities are a bit askew.
