What is the name of your state? Tennessee

My eighth grade child was told by a teacher(who is also football coach) in the classroom " I am going to treat you different because you play football, you should know what to expect from me" I went to the school and asked the teacher about the remarks and was told "that's right, I was his coach before I was his teacher".(they had summer practice before school started) Since I had already talked to the superintendant a week before on this same teacher about remarks made earlier, I called and told him about this one, he assured me that he would talk to the principal and have him to get in touch with me. I have called and left a message two times to let him know that the principal has still not contacted me. I feel as if it's being pushed under the rug. He is the only teacher for that class so I can't have my son removed from that class. What should I do now?

Does the teacher have the right to tell a student " I am going to treat you different because..."?
If not, then what's the next step when the local officials seem to not care?
Thanks

If the teacher said "I am going to treat you different" I can only hope it's not an English teacher!

Seriously, I don't believe that telling someone they will be treated differently constitutes anything you can act on. If your son ends up being treated badly, then you act on it. Don't jump the gun.

It seems like a really odd thing to say, and if you'd said that you only got that from your son (as opposed to having talked to this teacher/coach) I would have told you I didn't believe it.

Good luck :)

Where is the line at on '' treated badly"? What's the difference in telling a child I'm going to treat you different because you play football, than telling him, I'm going to treat you different because you're white, black, chinese, short, fat? Is discrimination not applied in diffent forms?

Who said he's going to treat him badly? Did it occur to you that the coach is going to expect more of him because he's also his football coach? Perhaps you and your son should be thankful that there's a teacher who intends to make him live up to higher expectations than you apparently have.

Every student to participates in sports or other extra activities is treated differently.

Get your panties out of a bunch and chill. You have no legal issue and your childish crap diverts attention from posts with REAL issues.

Funny.... Last year, I had occasion to have a conference with my son's 7th grade English teacher. He's very bright, but has a tendency to be a bit lazy and pretty much get away with the minimum he can get away with. There's really very little effort involved for him to get straight A's, and we've had our arguments about his putting in the minimum and meeting his teachers' standards rather than mine. An A's an A, right?

So anyway, I told this teacher that I had no problem whatsoever with her pushing my son and grading him to a higher standard than she grades her other students. She (and the guidance counselor) were shocked. They found it impossible to fathom that I would prefer to see him bringing home Bs and learning to write well, than bringing home As for crap work. His teachers this year (8th grade) know what he's capable of, and yes, they treat him differently. Because he needs to be. He's graded harder, and given the possibility to rewrite.

I WANT teachers to treat my kids differently.

Excuse me, I do have high standards. I graduated with honors and would like for my children to do the same. I never said he was treated badly, I was just asking insurancelady what was "treated badly". Well the coach part of it is over with, he wasn't much of a coach this year and he won't be one next year. The teacher/coach should still be able to seperate the classroom and the field. Im not the only parent having issues with this teacher, so maybe one day he will be at your school showing up to make everyones life hell. Cause he doesn't teach the students. If he was hard core at teaching, I would be all in favor, but he just doesn't teach. I have three children in school, one being a senior. I have never had any problems with the teachers until this one. So BelizeBreeze I can have my panties in a wad until I get ready to snatch them off and shove them down your throat.
