My husband and I bought a used 1996 Subaru about 4 years ago from a local subaru dealership. I did not buy the extended Subaru warrantee but putchased another one instead- I had been unclear as to why one was preferable to the other. About a year later when the car reached 60,000 miles the head gasket on the car blew and then we found out that the warrantee would not cover the cost to fix it. The dealership stepped in as did Subaru and the car was fixed at a minimal cost. We found out that Subaru was having problems with the '96 models and the head gaskets. The car ran fine until last year when again the head gasket blew. We were not particlarly trusting of the mechanics at the dealership so had the car worked on by our regular mechanic in a licenced repair shop. Two months later, the head gasket has blown yet again. We cannot afford to fix, cant trade it in as its not running and we still owe payments on the car. I am at a loss on what is the best direction to take- if there is anything that I can do.

When you found out Subaru was having problems with the '96 models, and fixed the car at minimal cost even though it was beyond warranty and they had no responsibility to, you should have sold it to the first buyer you could find. Sorry, but you'll have to chalk this up to a lesson learned!
