What happens if I dont pay medical bills

erm..I'm in my early, early twenties and i was not eligible for insurance through my employers. however i went to the emergency room recently and the bill is shockingly high. There is no possible way I can ever pay them back. The big question today is...what happens if I don't pay them back? Will I just be plagued with bad credit?...for how long??
