With a contingency, an attorney uses his own money and is paid from the damages awarded in the case. There are several reasons why an attorney might withdraw from a case but the possibility of having to go to trial could be one. It is possible that it was apparent that no settlement was going to cover your medical expenses and the attorney costs of a trial.

You need to find out what has been done so far in your case. If the attorney will not return your calls, you can file a complaint with the State Bar. An attorney cannot just withdraw from a case with no explanation.
