i recently changed roommates and my new roommate and i agreed on an internet service that would cost us each 25 dollars. I agree to this. She then told me when we got our first bill that there was a two hundred dollar start up fee of which i was not aware of. I told her i wasnt going to pay for it and she said i agreed to it. I told her that if i would have known that i had to pay that money to set it up that i would never have agreed to it. She is now getting a lawyer to have me pay. Should I get a lawyer as well as I think I am about to be sued? I am quite young and have never had to deal with legal matters. Please tell me what you think I should do???

Based on your post, it seems that the blame for this issue really falls on BOTH of you. You should have asked for ALL the details of this 'deal' and she should have explained ALL the details.

I would NOT go out and talk with an attorney, YET. It is very easy for someone to threaten legal proceedings, but a completely different thing to actually do it. You are only talking about $100.00 here and it is possible that she will realize that an attorney will cost her much more than that to go forward.

I would try to amicably resolve this dispute and hopefully try to 'save' your room-mate status (I assume that neither of you want to pay 100% of the rent and expenses).
