What is the name of your state? Maine.

Today I entered a store that I'd patroned for several years. After staying for 30 minutes the owner came up to me and told me to leave without provocation. I asked why and the owner stated "for personal reasons." I left and consulted another patron of the store who informed me that since October 2004 the owners had been telling other patrons that I had not only stolen from the store but other customers as well.

First, would this constitute any legal impropriety on the part of the owners of the store (if in fact they have been informing the general public that I'm a risk without reason)?

Secondly, do I have any legal recourse?

Thanks in advance.
