Isn't my 401k mine for the rest of my life?

What steps do I take in order to locate my 401k from a couple of previous jobs? I wrote the companies (both located in Texas), one never replied, the other states there is no record of me. Both jobs were some 8 yrs ago. I want to locate these accounts and roll them over into my present 401k. Any ideas?

I guess you should have checked with the plan adminitrators of those 401K's at the time you left those companies to make provisions to keep them advised of your address, or roll the money into an IRA.

If you have not received annual statements from those plans in over 7 years, it would not surprise me if those accounts were considered abandoned (turned over to the state?). So SOL could mean something other than statue of limitations.

Not an expert. Just noticed year ago that bank accounts inactive for 7 years were listed in local newspapers as a last ditch effort to find account holders.

Unfortunately...

Weak as it sounds, I left both places under quite heavy medication (I have epilepsy). Matter o' fact, quite a bit is coming back. I know it's at least worth a try. Thanks for the info! But if the HR dept of both companies don't give me any info regarding it, what's the next step?

Talk to the companies and find out what companies were administering their 401K plans 8 years ago. Then contact those companies directly.
