What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Hawaii

I live in Hawaii and am going to be accepting a job in NY and will be moving sometime in July. My lease is month-to-month at the moment. Once I get the offer paperwork in hand, I'm going to let my LL know that I will be leaving by the end of July.

The issue is that I am probably not going to be able to get all the cleaning done in the apartment since I'm not moving into another place. Pretty much the movers will come get the majority of my stuff and then I go to the airport with what I have left. I don't have anywhere to go so that I'm completely out of the apartment to get carpets done, etc. And I'm selling my car as well, so that makes getting around more difficult.

I want to make this as easy as possible on my LL... he's been great and I've been a great tenant, absolutely nothing negative at all. Should I ask him if he can take the cleaning out of my deposit or is there some other way? I'm going to pay through July, but will probably be out mid-July just because of the timeframe I need to be at my new job.

So for all the LLs on here, what would be the best course of action? I just want to have a few possibilities to present to him so that he can decide what works best for him. Thanks so much!

I suggest you just let the LL deduct whatever (well not whatever but you know, reasonable) from your security. most likely even if you were able to stay to clean, you will be able to clean to rentability. make it easy on yourself, leave it up (within reason) to LL.

I would be upfront and ask if he has a cleaning agency that he can recommend. I say this because they don't usually do a very good job. Since you won't be there, have him supervise the cleanup and provide entry. In the meantime, there is plenty of cleaning you can do. There really is no excuse and if you really wanted to, you could get it done.

Thanks for the responses!

I do plan on cleaning as much as I can. I'm just worried about getting the carpets done because I'll still be physically in the apartment up until the day I leave.

The second the movers leave, you give key to professional cleaning service to do a thorough cleaning of the property and leave the key for the landlord.
