Therefore, the patent expired for all practical purposes on May 29, 2001.

FYI, unless there is a terminal disclaimer (as this patent has) or some other term adjustment, patents filed on or after June 8, 1995 expire 20 years from their earliest effective filing date, while patents filed before that date or patents in force on that date expire 17 years from date of issue or 20 years from their earliest effective filing date, whichever results in a longer term.
