When can I efile my 2020 return?

The IRS has not yet announced when it will start taking 2020 returns. Based on past years it would usually be the 3rd or 4th week of January, but given the problems the agency had during much of last year due to covid-19, it may be that it will be a bit later this year.

yea I could google this last year, but I have not heard anything yet. Efile wouldn’t involve any staff other than IT ppl running the systems on time. Paper file would require of agency staff to be there to handle return. My state require all efile

You should be aware the efile.com is NOT the IRS. They are an authorized IRS provider but not the IRS.

The IRS has the job of updating its systems each year to handle changes in the tax law, changes in forms, etc. That job is an ongoing one and does require significant staff effort — and that doesn't even account for all the work needed for the IRS to put out the two rounds of stimulus payments that Congress required it to do on top of everything else. Covid-19 has affected the service center staff just as it has the rest of the agency. So it is not as simple as I think you imagine it to be.
