I am a student at a learning institution. Alright, I had a dispute with a person over a bill I received. I asked him for a breakdown as there was a sizeable difference between what he billed me for and what my records stated. He made up some hours and sent them to me. I had no idea the times were made up so I checked them with my schedule and discovered time inconsistencies where I had an alibi to prove I wasn't with him. (This is an accompanist, I am a voice major).
The next day, 8 in the morning, his girlfriend (a teacher at my institution) calls me and screams at me accusing me of being a thief and then proceeds to yell obsene words. I claim that I am tired and do not have to listen to that so I hang up. She leaves a rather horrid voice mail on my phone and then emails me threatening that if I do not pay the full incorrect amount immediately she would contact my professors and everyone I know to make sure they understand what a "freaking crook" I am. They have succeeded in doing so and my reputation, as well as my comfort level in that institution has been greatly diminished.
I am unsure of what my rights are. They are still viciously contacting people and I fear I cannot concentrate on finals because of this happening. This was all over me asking for a breakdown. He says I cannot touch him because teachers are willing to sign affidavits regarding his honesty. I can get letters from students vouching otherwise. He is not an employee of the institution. Anyone have any ideas?

There are many threads like this asking the same question. Why haven't you used the "search" function? Try it.

Forgive me, I'm rather stressed out by this situation and am having problems thinking with a clear mind. If this is a stupid question, please bear with me. What would be some good keywords to search for?

Thanks to the search function, I have found many solutions. Here are the main questions I am trying to find answers to.

(1) Is there a crime that I can charge them with?
(2) Would you consider the emails and the voice mail where they threatened me to be blackmail? As in .. if you don't pay us the entire amount immediately, we will ruin your reputation and make your last year at this institution miserable.
(3) They claim that the institution is siding with them. Can I do anything with that?

I know this is a horrid lot of questions to ask and to be honest, I feel downright nasty having to ask them as I have never had to deal with this kind of behaviour before. All of this is over the breakdown of a bill, it just boggles my mind. Any help, advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. My major requires me to keep contact with all my teachers and friends as they will help my get in places all my life and I feel like I am losing that link.
Thanks
Georgia.
