Ontario Canada
OK here is my sorry situation.
I live i Ontario, Canada. I was in university in my 3rd year and was excelling until an anxiety disorder de-railed my life.
I failed out of most of my courses and basically had a breakdown. I was in a very bad situation living in a total dump out of sight of my freinds and family.
In my severe depression, I wasnt taking charge of my affairs, and before I knew it, since I never re-enrolled in my classes for the next term, I was supposed to be making Ontario Student Loan payments.
I was completely broke living on a muffin or a can of soup a day, and by the time I realized how bad I had messed up, I had defaulted for 6 months on payments and they called in the entire loan.
I owe about $30,000.00 canadian dollars to Royal Bank of Canada for the main part of my student loan
I owe about $3500.00 canadian to the ontario or canadian goverment (cant remember which) because they had taken over the student loan program the last year i was on it
at the same time, CITIBANK VISA (which later turned into a MASTERCARD) also called in the entire amount I owed and cancelled my card so I owe them about $2500.00 canadian
ALL 3 of these debts have now been turned over to collection agencies.
this was 2 years ago. and i have been teribly afraid ever since and feeling very stuck.
I now am in a position where I dont have my degree and still need to finish so i can go to grad school and get a good job so i can pay off my debts
I am also an artist and have been living off my art under the table since then
my anxiety and depression have been treated and i am better, but now i am living with the fallout from my breakdown
I feel like a really big loser and often feel almost suicidally hopeless but at the same time i have a lot of medical bills and need money for schooling so i can improve my situation and be strong enough to pay off these debts one day.
I have to build myself up and get strong before i will take care of the debts.
so I have dual citizenship for the Euopean Community. I always planned to move over there anyway to be near family and the art scene I am in, so I thought maybe i could make a new start there, finish my studies, get a good job and take care of my debts when i am in a position to.
(as opposed to flipping burgers in Canada, making minimum payments to collection agencies for the next 20 years)
I talked to a credit counsellor today. she said that in a new country your previous bad credit wont follow you but i wanted to ask the opinion of people on this forum
if i moved to England or Ireland for example or anywhere else in the EC, will this terrible credit history follow me?
I will be going to university there and I would love to be able to get student loans there to help me with my tuition while i get my feet on the ground but i dont know if they will refuse me or if they will know about my old defaulted loan payments at all
does anyone know?
look forward to hearing your advice
regards
