What is the name of your state? NC
On June 12th I was hired by a local bilingual newpaper to translate articles from Spanish into English. I translated 5 articles for the July edition totaling 2113 words. At my interview with the general manager for the job, a rate of .07 cents per word was agreed upon; this is a total of 147.91. I emailed in all my articles and have copies of the emails containing the attachment and word count. I went in on July 5th to fill out tax sheets and turn in my word count, the general manager told me she would call me to pick up my check in a couple of days. Yesterday (July 13) I decided to call and find out why it was taking so long. The general manager was not there so I spoke to the office manager/owner. He told me that the general manager had told him that I was working for free. I do not know why he would believe this as everyone else who works in that office gets paid. But he told me he would have talk to the general manager about it and then hung up on me. I called back today and was given the general manager's cell phone number; when I called her, she did not answer so I left my number and asked her to call me back... She still hasn't returned my call eventhough she was supposed to be back in the office 15 mins after I had called. I have emailsfrom the general manager discussing pay and tax forms. I am hoping someone can tell me what to do, and how long to wait until I report the company to the labor board, what should I say to the managers? Should I tell them that if they do not pay me within a certain number of days I will report them to the labor board or talk to a lawyer??
Thank you in advance.

If you do not receive your pay with the next regular payroll then you should call the DOL. May I say Lala, that you must have some really bad luck, so far either you or your boyfriend have employment issues, restraining orders, stolen identities, problems with your cell phone contracts, malpractice issues, condemned property next door, sweep stakes scams. Wow!!

haha yea, if so many good things weren;t hapening I think I would go insane from all the bad... Anyhow, there isn't a next pay period, I translate articles once a month and then get paid after I turn in all the assigned translations for the month. And I have no plans of doing translations for this month if they do not pay me for the last ones I did.

What EXACTLY does your email say about your getting paid and the terms of your 'employment'??

If you are an 'independent contractor' as it appears, the 'labor board' has nothing to do with this.

Do what you want.... but they will laugh you off. First, as noted above, the 'labor board' has nothing to do with this... and your threat of an attorney over $200 is simply too laughable!!
Send them a 'pay me' demand letter by certified RRR. Give them 10 business days. Then, if they don't pay, go to your local small claims court.
