My mother-in-law left me her house in Maryland in her will. I do not want the house for many reasons. Do I legally have to abide by the will or can I refuse to take possession of the property.

Of course you can refuse to take possession - this is called a disclaimer. There are state technical requirements so check with the estate attorney. Generally, it must be within 9 months of death, you cannot accept any benefits, and you cannot choose who gets thge property. The property will pass as if you predeceased the deceased.
