What is the name of your state? Virginia

I was looking at attending Northern Virginia Community College in the fall of last year. I knew I was not considered in state since I had not been in Virginia for a year however I didn’t think it would be too much and since I qualified for financial aid I was sure that would take care of it. I did most of the things necessary to attend but there were still things I needed to show to financial aid like my high school transcripts. Well I went on line in the student center with my log on information to check out the classes I wanted to take. I looked at three classes. Two were 3 credit classes and the other was a 2 credit class. When I saw how much they would be charging me just for the class alone I was bummed. It was going to use pretty much all of the financial aid just for those 3 classes! I decided it wasn't going to work for me right now. So I took them off my schedule by clicking the delete button by the class I want to delete. Then I went on with my life and didn’t think to much about it and was waiting until I became a resident of Virginia.

Out of the blue I got a letter saying that I owe financial aid $408 for a class that I did not attend. I called up the school got transferred a ton of times and was then also told that not only do I owe financial aid $408 but I owe the actual school $900 something! The lady I spoke with told me that I was withdrawn from one of the classes and I didn’t drop it properly I tried to explain that I didn't even know I signed up for it and I was just looking at the classes and how much they would cost me and when I found out I deleted them off my schedule and thought that was all I needed to do (I had never been to college and was not familiar with the procedures of dropping a class or anything). She told me that I was dropped from one and the other one they didn't even show. She told me that there was nothing I could do and I would just have to pay. I was not fond of that response so I ended up going to the campus and speaking with the business department. They informed me that if I want to dispute a charge that I will need to write a letter so a committee can go over it and decide on if my dispute is valid or not. So I did.

I wrote pretty much what happened and that I didn't understand why I was dropped from one and withdrawn from another. I made no attempt to pay or attend and they didn't even have all the paper work they needed from me. I didn’t hear anything back and after a month and receiving a letter from a collection company I called the school and eventually found out that they came to a conclusion that was not in my favor. I have yet to receive a letter to that effect and still have gotten nothing about the $900 charge to the school just the $408 I owe financial aid.

Is there anything I can do to dispute this further? Should I take legal action and would it hold up?

Someone please help me with this. I dont know what to do and I dont have enough money to pay it right now. I looked into legal aid but I make just over the income limit.

I still have not received a letter stating that the school has come to a decision even though the business manager told me they did. I have been getting letters from debt collectors and do not want this on my credit and will try everything for that not to happen. But I do not believe that I should be charged for a class that I had no intention of taking! Also that they still charge me the out of state fees when I didnt even attend! I signed no documents and got no confirmation emails or letters sent to my place. There was no pop up saying that by clicking on this class you have agreed to have it on your schedule and must attend or else I could be withdrawn and am responsible for paying all charges associated with that. There was nothing! Is that legal? What can I do?

Someone please help!

Why didn’t you go the registry office and check when you dropped the classes?

This may not apply to Virginia but in New Mexico you get the first two weeks of class to decide if you want to audit/credit the class. Pass the two weeks, if you decide to drop the class you are considered withdrawn and have to pay for the class without receiving credit for that class.

When you receive finaid they determine the amount you receive on the status of enrollment, full-time, half-time, etc. If you do not fulfill your status during that semester then you owe the college the difference.

It is your responsibility to make sure you dropped the class in time.

I don't know if I mentioned this but I did not know that I had actually registered for the class. I didn't think I had it on my schedule and was supposed to drop it. I clicked on it only to view the class and see how much I would be looking at spending and when I saw that it was too much I deleted it off so when I exited the site I had nothing on my schedule.

My fiance just registed for classes at the same place and did the same thing. He is planning on taking these classes (Unlike me) and has yet to pay. Well they called him up and left him messages saying that if he does not pay in the next week or so that he will be dropped. I never got any call like that! I am not sure if my financial aid played a part in that or not. I am still waiting for my letter back from the school actually stating that my letter of dispute was decided on (not in my favor).

I am really considering getting real legal advice and hopefully persuing it. So let me know if anyone else has useful information for me.

Thanks.
