Help! My family is renting a house in PA since early this year. There is a smell that gets worse every time the furnace runs. It is sewer gas, being pulled in by our furnace, which draws air from a crawl space under the house. The landlord has said he wants to fix this, he has had a plumber take a look to see what the problem is - The plumber thinks it is either gas from an old sewage system that was not closed off completely when the current septic tank was put in, or gas returning from the current tank. The smell is horrible. What can we do except wait for him to fix the problem? I'm concerned about health issues, besides being disgusted by the smell.
Are we legally allowed to withhold the rent check until this is resolved? I told the landlord before the end of October that I couldn't take it any longer, and he had the septic tank emptied shortly afterward, and later called the plumber when I complained again that we still had the smell. It seems that he is trying to pacify us, but a neighbor tells me that he knew about the problem before we moved in, and the past tenants complained about it the entire time they lived here.
What can we do?

Your remedies are stated in the L/T laws. Given your situtation, you are justified to withhold rent but it must be done properly and in accordance with the respective L/T laws.
