What is the name of your state?VA
I have been subpeoned to testify in a trial; can my work force me to use my vacation to cover the time i will be gone? thanks for the help

Very likely, yes. While being summoned for jury duty is "protected" in virtually all States, I doubt many States offer similar protections for an employee subpoenaed as a witness. You may want to contact VA's DOL to inquire about any regulation your State has but it's more than likely your employer is free to debit your vacation bank for your absence from work.
