What is the name of your state?Illinois
I recentlly quit a job as a structural steel and architectural metals detailer (draftsman). I was hired as a detailer / project manager. I was asked by my employer to do some CAD drafting with my own computer at home. Eventually I was asked if there was a way I could bring my equipment in to the office until the company was able to supply a comouter for me. After 6 months of waiting a company computer never appeared. This is only part of the reasons why I quit. As I was packing up my equipment my employer demanded that I download my drawing files. I refused contending that:
1) They are in posesion of plotted drawings, Thus they have the finished product.
2) The files were created on my equipment andwith my AutoCad program wich they never compensated me for.
3) I never had access to the company network and there fore had no place to download to!

My question is are these files my intelectual property? Is my former employer entitled to them? Can I deleat the files to make more room on my hard drive without giving the files to my former employer?

If you were paid when the files were created, they belong to your former employer even if it is your computer.
