Has anyone ever heard of someone using welfare benefits as an excuse for not giving a child the fathers last name and would it be hard to prove?

I have heard of women not reporting or listing the father's name when applying for welfare so that the father would not have to pay to reimburse the assistance. I have no idea as to how easy it would be to prove or not. And actually, it's a really dumb thing to do - causing the tax payers to support the children when the men should be supporting their children from the start. My opinion anyway.

Thanks for your comment. But the father is now having to go to court to pay back the state and back support which all could have been avoided had he been acknowledged as the father from the start, with his name on the birth certificate. He would have had no problem supporting his child. He supported the woman and her other 2 children (whom both have different fathers but don't have their fathers name either)

It's a sad situation, but it happens. The instance that I know of, the father knew about the child and "supposedly" told the mother not to put him on the documenation. Every case is different. I wish anyone in this situation luck.
