What is the name of your state? California
I was recently dismissed from my job which i had worked for 8 years. I can say that i did deserve the termination because i had been given chances to rectify my tardiness within the last 6 months. Anyways I left my toolbox there because i needed to find a vehicle large enough to haul it away. The supervisor told me to that it would not be a problem. A week later i get a call from an ex co-worker asking if i had picked up my tool box. I said no and called some of my other ex-coworkers to find out who had taken my box. When i called them they asked if i was calling from jail because the story was that i had stolen a few brand new vehicles from their inventory and i had got caught by the police. I supposedly stole keys from the work place which made it easy for me to still the cars.
I told them that this was all fabricated, rumors, lies, but they siad they heard it from my supervisor and that he had confiscated my tool box to hold for the police. I went to pick up my box the following day and sure enough my box was being held in a locked gated area. My super was off so i talked to another person in charge and he said that he was not allowed to give my box per my supervisor. i had him call my super and he told him to release my box but not before he went through my box to check for anything that might belong to the store, then to evacuate the premisis. i was upset by all the drama called him up and asked why i was being treated like a criminal when all i was fired for was being late. Every one i ran into that day was asking me if it was true what they had heard. What to do now? And no it was not true, wasn't in jail either.

yes i took my toolbox and the rest of my belongings that were in my locker. It's just a bad rap to have when you work on cars for a living and then someone says your stealing them too. Other shops can hear about this and be suspicious, no?

There are thousands of posts similar to yours so I have prepared a standard answer:

Get a lawyer.

Invest $20K and three years.

Sue the bad people for defamation.

If you win, expect them to keep doing it.

If you lose, expect them to keep doing it.

Stand by for other opinions.

Your only option at this point is to see what kind of reference they give you. Hope for a good reference, but expect a neutral reference.
