What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Hawaii

Aloha,

I just turned 50 and my wife is 26. I have been working and paying into SS since age 18 and own my own company (Inc.). My wife is not a US citizen. She has lived here for 2 1/2 years. I have 2 adult children. Her and I have none. I plan to take SSI when I turn 62.

We are considering moving to her home country (where I will not work) but I have been informed that she will not be able to collect my SS benefits after I expire unless she has lived in the USA for a "solid, uninterupted 5 years".

1) Is the above accurate and
2) Will she have to wait until she is 62 to collect...if she can collect at all?

Thank you in advance and happy holidays.

Not sure about the five year rule, probably true since she is not a US citizen and will not be living in the US and then there is also alien taxation. Not sure about any of that.

However, she absolutely does have to be age 60 to get widow's benefits and if you are still alive, she has to be 62 for retirement.

And you are not filing for SSI (Supplemental Security Income a welfare program) at 62, you are filing for Retirement Social Security.

THanks Onder....you're input was helpful and appreciated.

Anyone have the facts on this 5 year thing? We are curious if she has to be here 5 years straight ( and uninterrupted).. or a combined 5 years.

It is very important that we have this determination.
Thanks again!
