What is the name of your state? Virginia

Husband received a call at work from Portfolio Recovery Associates, in regards to a $6,000 credit card that he defaulted on 3 years ago. I was aware of the card, and had made previous payments on it for him. In talking with Josh from PRA, he informed me that my husband had a debt showing up from 1989 from Zayres. It's less than $200, but he couldn't provide any other information than that. Husband doesn't recall having a Zayres account, and since that store is closed, we have no real way of finding out. I told Josh from PRA that it was past the SOL, and he said yes, but it still shows up on credit report and will affect the credit if we apply for a mortgage. It's not on the credit reports. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yep. Don't do ANYTHING with this account until they provide a written VALIDATION. Then, when received, review the records to see if the SOL has tolled on the account.
If the debt is valid and the SOL has not expired..... then pay it.
However, if the debt is invalid or the SOL has expired... tell them to stick it.

A good validation letter can be found at http://www.creditinfocenter.com/forms/
