A dba change means nothing.

If he was suddenly reemployed by some new distinct company, he'd have known that. They'd have essentially "terminated" him from the old job and hired him in the new with all the incumbent paperwork.

Not if they were sloppy about getting things done properly. In all seriousness its more than likely that there are shenanigans going on or at least serious mistakes happening. I just wanted to point out that there was a small chance that no shenanigans were happening.
