So agree about buying an older car from the snowy parts of the country! Our kids come down south to buy used cars. But then, of course, you have to beware of hurricane cars, which have been involved in flooding. My husband (mechanic/body man's son) is an excellent person to take with you to look at a car. But unfortunately, it is really hard to tell a young person of limited means trying to buy a car that "looks okay" and "goes when I start it and mash the gas" doesn't mean it's a good buy. Hope you and he can work something out soon.

Update
my son made a complaint to the Dpw of Rhode Island and had them inspect the vehicle. And it was determined that the vehicle shouldn’t have pass the state inspection. They in turn sent a notification to the inspection place and which they have to respond within 10 work days. Got information that they did respond and decided to go to court. Now this court is just a fancy why of saying they are going into an office and talk about it. As we lead to believe that they will get fine and if the don’t what to settle with my son they they also face a 30 day suspension from inspections. But was told that this is the state doing this and the state doesn’t do anything fast. Lol

Thanks for the update. It sounds promising for your son.

Another and final update
had the hearing of the inspection and the attorney for the car maintenance place and the certified inspector finally met the dmv person and they were told if they try to work out something with my son. The decision on the fine and or suspension would be considered . Then my son got a letter from a lawyer from the seller of the vehicle offering more then half the money he bought for the vehicle for. He rejected the offer and settled for 90% of what he paid for the car. The offer came to us a complete surprise because we didn’t even bother with this person ( the seller) due to we were sure we didn’t have a chance of getting anything. We think that since the person who inspected the vehicle and pass it was his bother . So we think that his job was on the line. But what they don’t realize is my son was not involved anymore so their nothing to do like drop the complaint . And now he has to sell the truck for junk and the plow package and hopefully he can come out hole in this hole situation. But I’m am hoping a little that he’ll lose some money cause he did a lot wrong and money is a good teacher

Your son appears to have come out of this better than I would have guessed. I hope he recovers enough money from the seller to invest in another vehicle - and that he gets an independent mechanic’s inspection prior to purchase. He should put aside enough money for inevitable repairs, too. Few old used cars will escape the need for work.

Thanks for the update, Hole9yard.
