I a in south carolina, greenville county.I was arrested for discharging a firearm within city limits. Someone left their gun in a restroom at a bar/restaurant. I actually thought the gun was a toy. The woman before me in the restroom said jokingly someone left their toy gun. I went into the rest room and stupidly picked it up and it fired into the floor. I told all this the the officers. The woman also told the officers she believed it was a toy also. I also told the judge the same thing apon release. I am an adult woman with no prior criminal record, even traffic violations. What can expect? Any advice would be appreciated. Should I retain a lawyer? Thank you for the advice.

What are you actually charged with (there are several SC statutes that might apply here). If you are charged, I'd definitely consult a lawyer. You don't want a firearms charge on your record. This is one of those things that even if the punishment is little more than a slap on the risk, the later impact can be severe (for instance, if you ever want to work at the airport, you may find it difficult to get cleared for the badge there...).

There are lawyers that specifically handle firearms violations.
