I had registered a piece of art last year that featured dozens of characters on it.

This year, I decided to select a few of those characters to be used in an animation and comicstrip. I gave it a completely new title, re-designed the way the characters looked, and added a few new characters.

My question is would this new piece of art still qualify as a derivative work?

I can see a gray area with the re-designing of a character. Some of my characters 'evolved' quite a bit from the original drawings.

Another question is, when I put my copyright label on these new animations, should I give them the name of the orignal artwork that it was registered under?
