I am a salaried professional working for a private company in Maryland. Myself and 10 of my colleagues are going to be requested to work and live in Kansas for 56 days starting March 1st.

Must my employer give official notice of the trip? And how far in advance?

Can I refuse to go without fear of being fired?

Thank You,
Jeff

The employer is acting legally. You can refuse to go, but whether you can do so and salvage your job is completely up to them.
