How long must a builder keep plans???

House is 9 yrs. old........Builder says he only keeps plans for about 5 yrs, then trashes them.....Why doesn't this pass the smell test??.........Is there any other way I can come up with plans??......City/County agencies??.......Never recieved a set upon house closing 9 yrs.ago...Didn't realize it until now, elderly owners.................Thank you

It does. Simply, unless there is a local permit requirement, there is no statutory obligation for a builder to keep plans after the property is closed.

Yep. You can sketch them yourself.... or maybe hire a local architect to recreate them.

Ask your local permit folks.

Are you saying that you are NOT the original owners of the property?? If so, even less likely that the plans even exist... much less an expectation that you were somehow 'owed' them.

Why do you need plans?

Dont "overvalue" building plans. They were just ideas on paper, what exists is what you house is.
