Is this Illegal? I was hacked by my ex

What is the name of your state? NY

Tonight I tried to log into my hotmail account and it said my password was invalid after 4 attempts...Someone told me that my ex logged into my account and answered the security questions and changed my password. Should i report this to the police? Is there anyway of them tracking this at all to prove he did this or not?? What can I do??? help!
