Moving another person into the place would not be a good idea, if indeed it would make her feel "threatened". When dealing with a volatile person or situation, doing anything that might escalate the situation is ill advised.

As far as you initial legal concerns, as posted - well, this is NY.

A Family Law atty can give you advice about Family Court - because that's where someone would file for an Order of Protection (domestic violence based restraining order).

However, if there's an incident resulting in the police being called in and as a result your ex-girlfriend presses charges - that would be Justice Court most likely - I do not thing a Family Law atty would be as good a choice representing you there.
