Hope this is posted in right area. My father is in a nursing home in NJ. He had one leg amputated and recently had an accident.
No one had emtied out his urinal so in the middle of the night when he needed to go he rang for help and no one came. Being the independent type he got up and into his chair but when he was going back to bed his foot slipped out from under him and he went face first into his nighttable.
His roomate rang for help for 10 minutes (something that neither has ever done before) and then got himself into his chair and wheeled himself to the nurses station only to here "was theat you ringing?"
My father needed several stiches by his eye had lots of bruising and ripped open the recent stiches on his stump leg. They did treat him well after someone finally arrived to help and have since given him extra urinals and reachers but I still feel that they were negligent. He does not feel he a case. Does he???
Thank You

I'm not sure that he has a case, but extra urinals was a smart thing to do. What if there was an emergency with someone else while he was ringing?

He may not have a case but, at the very least, he should write a letter to the nursing director and the owner/CEO of the home to alert them of the situation. They may be totally unaware that some of their staff ignores the nurse call bells/alarms and may want to reprimand and/or give the staff some additional training so it doesn't occur again.

I hope your father continues to heal and is feeling better. Good luck!

Thanks for your help!! I already have a letter drawn up for him to sign to the director (he doesn't write). I know there was no other emergency while his roomate was ringing cause 3 nurses were just sitting reading and talking at station. What really irritates me is that the nurse tried to tell the superiors that he fell out of bed and that was all. I hate to see elderly treated in such a way when they're spending there life savings for these people to care for them. Thanks again for your help!!:)

How did the staff document the incident in your father's record? Also, see if your father's roommate is willing to write down what he saw happen.
Good luck. Please let us know how it turns out.
