What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Maine

We are in the process of buying a duplex; sellers are divorcing; wife is asking to stay in the house for 8 days
after the closing because she says she cannot move until then. We are in a hurry to close, but are afraid
of the possible ramifications. Worst case scenario; she doesn't leave and we have to force her out.
Any thoughts?

With a mess left and no deposit to pay for it.

It is disfavored to take property in a sale that is not vacated. If you do, treat it like a tenant with a rental agreement and deposit up front.
