My friend owns a small Inn. She hired a lady to live on property and run the Inn. She was given $1500.00 every two weeks. The manager was not charged rent or utilites nor was she charged for food that was eaten that was provided for the guests in the Inn. The owner found the situation not to be working to her liking and with much coaching and couseling she hired another couple to come in and live on property. She offered the original manager a Sales Manager position with the Inn, lower salary...but also offered her two weeks of full salary for the managers position, in compensation for having to move out of the Inn. All parties verbally agreeed on this. Now the orginal Manager has come back and stated she owes her two weeks of living expense monies because she had to move out. The owner of the Inn is not sure whether legally she does or doesn't. The owner did however coach and cousel the previous manager on her performance and feels she was well aware that her job was in jeapordy. Question: Does she owe living expenses as well. There is no signed contracts, just verbal. And if not should she get a signed contract regarding the monies she will pay in order to avoid unemployment?
