What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL

I am tying to help my friend who wants to go back to work and stop collecting SSDI, and this is his wish. He brought up a good question. He used to make good money at his old job, so he gets a good sizable SSDI. He wanted to know if he gets a new job that pays much lower than his old job, and later if his health fails again and have to go back on SSDI again, will his SSDI be smaller than in than what it is now?

Could be smaller. Could be larger. Doubtful it will be the same. All depends on number of years used in the computation and the lifetime average. However, the months/years he was on SSDI will not be factored in at all.
